Mortgage rates are holding steady for now. Moneyfacts says the average 2-year fixed rate is now 5.97% and the average 5-year fix is 6%. This week the same number of lenders raised rates as cut them. Halifax and Lloyds Bank trimmed some deals by up to 0.09%. Rates can change quickly, so if your deal ends soon, it's worth getting advice early.
New help for first-time buyers is expected. The "Your First Home" scheme should offer a 20% government-backed loan on new-build homes in England, so buyers could put down a deposit as low as 2.5%. The BBC reports households will need to earn less than £110,000 (£140,000 in London) to qualify. Full details are due in the Budget on 28 October.
